Dear 5
(Anonymous) 2007-10-09 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)I have slowly and sadly come to the realization over the past few months that several of my geeky RL friends are very much like you describe. They are allowed to squee and sparkle over their fandoms but as soon as I do so over mine they laugh at me. If it happens in their fandom it's cool (or at the very least it's 'crack') - if something happens in my fandoms it's not. The only way to be cool with them is to pretend you don't care.
My advice - KEEP being enthusiastic. KEEP being fannish. Cynicism is such an exhausting emotion - sure you get a temporary charge out of being "clever" but then you have to go back to being miserable. Being happy and enthusiastic is much more uplifting.
Keep looking around. The Internet (and the Real World) is a big place. Stay away from 4chan if you don't like their attitude. You (like I) will eventually find people who like the fact that you are a positive person and will support you. It may be a long search but trust me it's worth it.
