This being why I hate that cover. The cover of the copy I own has a Survey Team cover painting on it. (The Survey Team books being the hilariously bad environmentally-controlled books the main character writes. Sometimes.)

I think the writer I read OBSESSIVELY when I was young has turned into an older version of HIM.

I'm not entirely sure! Herovit feels like he is being manhandled/eaten by his Craft, which the omniscient POV would seem to suggest is really his Graft, instead.

It also looks like a New Wave era cover. Those were trippy, regardless.

Many science fiction novels have weird goofy looking covers that have nothing to do with the actual story. There is an entire website about this called "good show, sir".
