It's not my fandom, but I feel your pain. My whole life I've been an early adopter but never a trend-setter. So the only thing I can say for myself is "I was into it before most of you were! About ten minutes before, but still!"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind not being the first in a fandom myself because it feels like after a fandom kicks off it gets really REALLY wanky.

HP fandom...natch....DP fandom...OH LORD THE EARLY DAYS 0.0 I was there...the Truefan-Antifan war wasn't pretty.

(IIRC some of the "truefans" started a rumor that an r34 artist was a real life sexual predator. No proof ...just their word that it happened and "HOW DARE YOU WATCH /FOLLOW HIM". When I heard it was only a rumor, I was really freaked out by the fact that they had no problem starting a life ruining rumor like that because they didn't like what someone was doing. I didn't like the guy's stuff but jeez....talk about playing with fire.)

I'm blanking, what is DP?

Because I thought "Doctor Poo" and now I can't think of anything else because I am laughing too hard.

Because I am actually 12.

LOL

AYRT

Danny Phantom.

The show is pretty good for at least the first 2 seasons. Season 3 is majorly crappy imo. D-Stabilized is the only episode I like. My loathing for the series finale is hot with the passion of a thousand suns.

about the true-fan anti fan thing: Butch Hartman, the creator of the series, had his own website and his own forum... a forum often frequented by actual minors, so he asked people to please not post links to slash or mature fanfiction and fanart

some batshit crazy fans took this as permission to go on a holy crusade to get fight to get removed every slash and mature fanfiction and fanart in every website ever

it was particularly vicious in deviantART, where a lot of fanfics were posted

and these holy crusaders or whatever insisted that people who liked slash and mature fanfiction weren't real fans, but actually "anti-fans", and that they, the righteous and pure, were the "true fans"

it was as ridiculous as it sounded, and it, combined with the huuuuge wait for the third season, which on top of everything was kind of disappointing, fragmented the fandom to the point where many people just fled it to escape the drama

A lot of them were mods on his forum who decided that being his mods gave them special authority in every other aspect of DP fandom.

I used to be on the forum. Until the day I left I worried every post that I'd get banned for something.

I'm thinking Danny Phantom

I think the creator of Danny Phantom might have been anti Rule34 (or anti-slash at the very least) as well

I've been there, OP. I don't want to be a trendsetter, but I've experienced something I was quietly loving later blowing up in popularity.

Well...at least you'll never be alone in your love?

TBH I'm sort of glad I got into the show so late because I didn't have to wait for every episode, and I've been in plenty of fandoms where I went through that; it can be excruciating! Also, there's already tons of fanfic/fanart/etc, so there's plenty to explore right off the bat. I won't deny that there's something neat about being there at the start of a fandom, but... *shrugs* It isn't that important to me.

Sorry? Maybe next time!

^this, so much

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How on earth are you a trend setter by getting into it before others?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
How on earth do you not understand what a trendsetter is?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Noun 1. trend-setter - someone who popularizes a new fashion

again, how on earth does the simple act of seeing it before someone else (and possibly mentioning it somewhere) make you a trendsetter?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because trendsetter is generally used to refer to the person who was the first one into a particular thing. Whether they actually caused the popularity or not is irrelevant.

I started watching Teen Wolf from the first time it aired, but I never really thought of being a trendsetter or wanting to be a trendsetting, because of it.

I think the people who write fic or do art are the ones who are remembered the most anyways.

Maybe next time a show starts and you love it, submit a secret anyways and see if the show gathers a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone I knew was into the show from the first ep, so it never felt to me like there was any point where it was airing and people weren't into it.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cast of the TV show "Teen Wolf". They are all young-looking people, one of them a man with short dark hair and light olive skin, another a woman with long wavy brown hair and light skin, another a man with short way dark hair and light olive skin, another a woman with light skin and long wavy black hair and another a lightly older man with light olive skin and short black hair, all standing and looking dramatically at the camera in front of a dark forest.]

About a month before this show really took off, I almost submitted a secret about feeling like the only one who loved it. I didn't, and then it got huge, and now I feel like this: [picture of one of the characters with glowing red eyes and huge fangs coming out of his widely open mouth]

I want to be a trend-setter, just once... That's lame, I know.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad OP. Leading the charge isn't all that great, especially once it gets so big nobody remembers how it started. Pretty sure I coined Social Justice Warrior while looking for an alternative to feminazi....and the world will never know.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I only got to be a trendsetter with one fandom ever. Perhaps try starting up some fandom places for something you like when fandom places are nowhere to be found? And remember, your enthusiasm for the places your create makes all of the difference.

Honestly I'm just thankful. I finally have people to talk to about this show!
