(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)

Good luck!

Oh never practice with family. You'll be hearing about every mistake you make for years to comes.

Yes. I still get the, "Remember what you did to the side of your mother's car?!"

It was thirteen years ago!! Thirteen! And my father did the same thing to the side of the van at the drive in when I was a kid! *facedesk*

Don't worry, It's doable. I got my driving license two weeks after my 28th birthday... three months ago. Actually, I found that parallel parking was kinda fun.

I'm 25 and I still can't drive. I tried learning, but I just couldn't get certain things down. (like turning at the right time or parallel parking) I think I lack the outward awareness needed for driving. :p

28 and can't drive. I have my license-- took the course when I was 17-- but have long since forgotten how.

Don't worry, it just takes practice! Expect to fail a few times, because it can be hard to get the hang of, but if you keep trying, you can do it! *waves pom-poms*

You can do it!

Don't be afraid to stop the car, take a breath, and try again.

Parallel parking:

1. Scope out your spot. Make sure there is no traffic.

2. Drive forward (or reverse, whichever you can do the most safely) until you are directly parallel with the vehicle in front of (or behind) the space you want.

3. Make sure no one else is trying the same maneuver on the opposite car in order to steal the space from you.

4. Turn your wheel sharply away from the curb if you are backing in to the space (angle towards the curb if you're driving forward).

5. Ease in slowly. When you are halfway there turn the wheel in the opposite direction to straighten out.

Parallel parking seems to be a "you've got it or you don't" thing. I could parallel park like a champion, but I could NOT back up to save my life; FWIW most people I have spoken with say the same thing (or the reverse). IDK why.

This is great.

I've been driving for 11 years, but I'm shit at parallel parking (it wasn't required for my driver's test, and you don't have to do it very much where I live -- which is probably why it isn't required for my driver's test). I am totally going to use these tips in a bid to stop sucking at it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
For me, my ability to do it changes on a daily basis. On some days, I can park in the smallest possible spot, on some days, I can't get the car straight in a spot that's twice the length of my car...

Another trick I learned was: If you stand parallel to the car in front of your space and start going back, only start turning the wheel once the back of the other car is in your back window (the one on the side).

Hey, this is me! :D Don't worry about it, anon--it's not that unusual, and it'll happen eventually.

YOU CAN DO IT

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe in you :3

(also..I wish I could take lessons . my parents have been forbidding it since I was seventeen and I'm almost OP's age :<. If they're nto forbidding it they're telling me "you don't really want to" and "it's too expensive and you can't afford it" and "you don't NEED a car so and so's mom doesn't drive and they're just fine." I feel like freakin' Rapunzel)

You can do it!

You can do it! A family friend didn't actually learn how to drive until she was in her 40's, so it's totally doable. It just takes practice [and hey, empty parking lots are great for practicing various types of parking - particularly if you use something to 'mark' what you need to park between.]

I'm 35 and I can't drive

I am however going to be getting moped lessons because mopeds are cheaper to run than a car and I want to save money

OP (but I doubt anyone will see)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I actually didn't do too bad! By the 3rd time I was pulling in pretty well and being close enough to the curb.

My only problems were the lack of other cars (I was using an unbusy street's parking spots) AND the fact that I don't have to pull forward because I got into the spot pretty well. My sister says she thinks they take off points if you don't have to pull forward.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I think you get points off if you do have to pull forward. You can look up your local requirements to be sure.

If it helps, when I had to take my drivers test (three times) whenever we did the parallel parking part it was always just behind one car. Never actually squeezing in. And there were no points taken off for pulling up. You can ask around or even call and ask for details at the place that gives you the test (DMV or whatever it's called in your area) for specifics.

Great job!
