Hard to Be a God by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_to_Be_a_God

They're very good writers in general, my personal favourite is Monday Begins on Saturday (a story about a dude working as a programmer in the Scientific Research Institute of Sorcery and Wizardry); the one problem that can arise is that there is a lot of Soviet cultural context in their books, but it does not apply (or rather, does not create problems) in the case of Hard to Be a God.

Ooh fantasy + scifi. Nice!

I'll have to look into them. Thanks for the info!
