But that's hardly a dog-pile? Everyone was really decent and seemed to be having a good time actually talking about both characters? Or is it a dog-pile because they weren't falling all over themselves to praise Sam? I...don't understand.

To a small but annoyingly loud subset of Sam!girls, it would absolutely count as a dogpile because people weren't falling over themselves to praise Sam.

Yeah, it's fairly well known in this fandom that saying anything that might be not 100% positive about Sam (or even being positive about other characters) means you are a hater and probably a Cas!Girl or a Destiel Shipper and you are wrong and aren't a real fan.

I got my first anon hate in tumblr for saying "I usually like Sam, but he was being beyond stupid on this episode. I don't blame him, I blame the writers". So yes, I think that some Sam!fans do tend to think that not praising Sam all the time equals a dogpile.
