I think it's really how those words are getting to the brain. Like, I've always been a good student through reading the text, and I can read quickly while still understanding. But I easily miss words or get distracted when spoken to. I've never bothered with audio books for this reason, on the few occasions I got them as gifts I was either bored or frustrated from missing things. I have been able to enjoy Night Vale, because I found something mindless I can do while listening to the episodes so I don't get distracted, but I'm also pretty sure I don't remember as much about it as I would if it were text.
