[Neverwinter Nights]

Addressing only the last part of your secret, my sister still plays Neverwinter Nights and has never looked at any other Bioware game. She's not what you'd call a hardcore gamer, though.

1) Linu is completely adorable,
2) I'm still pissed & confused at the lack of love for NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer, which is one of the best-written games I've ever played.

I love you, is that ok with you?

The writing for Mask of the Betrayer was amazing. I admit, I am drawn to media that deal with religous themes in interesting ways, but I never expected an expansion pack for a game like NWN 2 to be so thoughtful and deep (and it wasn't even written/developed by Bioware).

I guess the lack of love may in part be due to the somewhat lackluster main campaign (even though it works really well as a parody of the genre, and it had some great companions), and the combat. OH THE COMBAT. I've tried again and again to get some of my friends to play this series, and while they admitted that loved the writing in Mask the couldn't finish it because they found the round based combat too frustrating. If they even got around to playing Mask and didn't give up while playing the core games.

And they were all gamers. :/

NWN2 in general was hard for me to play sometimes. I actually really liked it. A lot. But in my country, it was only published dubbed and about every third NPC had the same voice actors - who didn't even try to make people sound different. It was kind of annoying.

You didn't even have the option to change languages on installation? That sucks. :/ My country dubs EVERYTHING but at least I had the option to switch to English on installation.

We have, with most PC based games at least, by now. But not all of them - Fable III for example, is not one of those games. Dishonored on the PS3 neither. Neverwinter Nights 2 back then... wasn't either, as far as I remember. It's really offputting, especially when the dubs aren't even good.

NWN2 main campaign was...well, the tutorial was pretty bad, the first chapter was kinda cliche then as of the first chapter finale I was completely hooked. I fucking love gith. Okay so the ending was 'rocks fall everyone dies', but there's so much wonderful gith stuff in the meantime. I really need to play it again - I want to try all the paths through MotB, for one thing.

Also, as MotB reveals, rocks fall, but not everyone dies.

Very late response here so I hope you see it (I'm catching up, okay!) but in response to your comment about media with unusual religious themes, have you ever read David Maine? I don't know this game at all, and you might not like reading, so this might not be your bag at all but I'd recommend him, especially Fallen, if it looks interesting to you :)

It's not apparent from the synopsis but it's written in reverse chronological order, so starting with Cain slaying Abel and moving backwards from there.

SKY. Can we talk about Sky? That guy was my favorite Bioware companion ever. One of the first actual gay-romances in video games, too. He was so roguish, but with an incredibly sad backstory (though that's sort of boilerplate now when it comes to snarky dudes). Dude was probably my first real video game character crush.

I JUST HAVE TONS OF FEELINGS ABOUT SKY OK

[Picture is Linu from the videogame "Neverwinter Nights". She is a young woman with light skin, pointed ears and red hair pulled back in a bun?. She is wearing a white shirt and a metallic armor vest. She is standing talking to another armored woman somewhere with flagstones on the floor.]

It's been eleven years, and Linu is still my favorite Bioware companion character.

1. She's the comic relief. 2. The core campaign isn't that good. 3. Everyone else has moved on to Dragon Age, Mass Effect or even Knights of the Old Republic.

I loved Linu!

And I'm still playing the game :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I still love NWN so much. All of it. Everything.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-28 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Linu as a companion because I imagined my character giving her good sound spankings for all her wacky screwups.

Don't judge me.

Neverwinter Nights was my first D&D style video game, and I still play it occasionally for nostalgic reasons. Much more often than KotOR or even DA:O.

And yes, Linu was great. If you did all her quests she turned out to be much more than the comic relief cleric. (Not as great as Dalen though. He will be forever my first Bioware crush ;) )

Occasionally I'd think I'd love a remake with expanded roles for the companions. I'm certain if they were to get as much screentime as the companions in DA:O some of the NWN companions would turn out much more ineresting characters than their modern counterparts.

I love NWN so much. Even after 11 years it's still my favorite game of all time. And Linu is awesome! Don't feel guilty OP, you're not alone.
