Well...Yeah. Adopting a pet right after you had a huge life change [I'm assuming there's more to the story than 'They moved out' here] is generally not a good idea.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem would really be? If you did it right, you wouldn't be leaving them in the same room[s] together alone for a while anyways.

Yeah, there's quite a bit to the story, tbh, but it's been done for nearly a month at this point, and I haven't done anything really stupid except spend too much money on perfume.

I just got an email back from the guy who has her - she's 3 or 4 and he says that she's up to date on her shots and things. I guess it comes down to whether or not I can trust someone on Craigslist not to give me a pet with feline leukemia. If I didn't have another cat, I wouldn't hesitate, but I've got to think of my current pet first.

Ask to go to their vet with them to get a medical history on the cat. And if it hasn't had a test but you're still worried and seriously want to consider the cat, put some skin in the game and shell out for a feluke test while you're there.

Ah, I'm sorry you went through that, OP. That was the main thing sticking out since I've sadly known some people who adopted a pet right after something big like that happened then decided they didn't want it after the fact.

You could probably ask him to give you vet records proving she doesn't - but like the person below said, if you don't think it's a good idea then you might be right.

Okay, so I emailed the guy back and asked him for the vet records. If I can verify with the vet that she's vaccinated and clean, then I will take her. He says that he's letting her play with his kittens, but people can be stupid with pets, and I really don't want my cat to get anything because of the stupidity of others.

Honestly, the other reason I'm considering it is because the guy says he's an retired police officer with a service animal, which means this cat gets along with other pets in general.

Aaaand of course he emails back to say he can't get the vet records just now because the cat is from a relative who just went into a nursing home.

*sigh*

Well, no new cat for me, I guess.

did he say he COULD get them though? like soon maybe? i doubt he's lying (not that i blame you for being wary of course) so if he can get the medical records soon i think you should still consider adopting this cat (if this is the only hangup you have about it, rather).

OP

Well, the part I just realize I neglected to mention is that the headline of the ad is "Free Cat to Good Home or Going to the Shelter Today". So, maybe he could get them, but not in the time frame that he's interested in.

This actually is kind of making me mad. That you guys don't think it's strange for me to want to see the records first makes me wonder why this guy didn't get the records when he agreed to take the cat and try to adopt it out. And then to threaten the pound?

Poor kitty :-(

Surprised he didn't have the records on hand? No - most people don't and if it's a relatives cat they could be difficult to get. Surprised he's only giving one day? ...a little, but I expect people to be horrible, so.

He doesn't even have to get the records, all he needs to do is tell you what vet has the cat's records. You can call them up and explain the situation & I'm sure they'll let you know if the cat is up to date on vacs and has any chronic conditions.

Even if the relative went into a nursing home, someone in the family should know what vet the cat was going to.

You'll need the owner's name, of course, but if this guy is serious about finding the cat a home, he should be willing to provide this info.

You could always keep the cat separate until you got the records. I've gotten cats off the street before, and I just kept them in a separate room until I got everything cleared by the vet. (And I also wouldn't expect someone to have the vet records immediately. I know I don't; I'd have to get them from the vet, and that is with it being my own cat, not a relative's cat.)

This. Plus you're supposed to that anyways with a new cat, to let both of them get used to each other's scent.
