I like it because it has strong female characters. And because it has weak female characters. And because it has weak female characters who become strong. None of the women in this manga are straight-up damsels, and none are straight-up bland asskickers--they're people, with their own personalities and quirks. This is better than I'd expect even from a manga marketed to women, and it's amazing in an ecchi manga. (And it's not even that it skimps on ecchi--a character being shown topless in this manga does not preclude her being completely awesome, which is a nice change of pace from stories that strip away all sexuality from their heroines in an attempt to make them "independent.")

Of course, that's just what drew me in. The other thing I like about this manga is that it addresses all the issues its premise brings up. All of the women (and female children!) who're on the island are there because someone didn't want them, or wanted them less than they wanted to appease the "demon lord." They're castoffs and rejects, and even if they try to leave the island, the outside world has no reason to accept them. But this doesn't mean Exodia's simply sheltering them--as one would-be demon slayer brings up, many of these girls would still be home with their families if Exodia had never returned. His very existence is making things worse, and this is also directly addressed. (Again, this is much more thought-provoking than I'd expect from an ecchi manga, and again, it doesn't get in the way of the ecchi.)

And, to be honest, I like it because I actually find the lowbrow sex jokes funny. (I previously read and liked My Balls. The humor in this manga is actually a step up from that one.)

fair enough

I might actually check it out someday, based on this description
