It's been a while since I last saw it, but yeah... It doesn't strike me as the kind of movie that'd ever have a fandom.

I think if it were released today it'd have a fandom. THey'd all ship Bryce/Karl with a few fetishists for Whistler and his blindness and maybe a side of Bryce/...whatever Ben Kingsley's name was hatesex.

Actually, now I wish it had a fandom. I hate you, OP. And I don't even own this movie, so I can't watch it.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-08-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess if it starred some of the trendy actors these days, then yeah. Otherwise, I doubt it -- Redford is too old, Poitier is too black, Aykroyd isn't fit enough, Kingsley isn't typically attractive, etc.

...Ugh, never mind me. I'm just in a mood and I've been bitter about what garners fandoms these days.

You're not lying though. Or rather, your mood isn't.

Mm, unfortunately >:\

God help us, you're not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing Poitier is is hot. So, so hot.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Young Poitier was fine. I recommend the Defiant Ones to all the people who want proof.

He's kind of old in Sneakers, though... Everyone's kind of old in that movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but since I've aged over 20 years since this came out? Whole new world of appreciation.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It also has River Phoenix, who was hot like fire. Seriously want to watch this movie again.

A Sneakers secret?! :D

Sneakers is a great movie and has always been a family favorite! If it ever had a fandom, I'm grateful I never knew about it. Some things I just like to keep to myself and not learn about any batshit that might be brewing.

No matter the movie or medium, entertainment will always be criticized for one thing or another. Some of it deservedly so, others not so much.

Favorite line (or most memorable): Oh Gunther!

[Picture is a poster of the movie "Sneakers", showing the cast poking out from beneath a curling piece of paper or a similar material.]

I love this movie so goddamn much, but I think I'm glad it doesn't have a fandom. Because for all the deserved props that I imagine for Whistler, pretty sure haters would be up in arms over some slight they imagine lives in the existence of Crease and Elizabeth.

"Oh, no! He's black and angry! Oh, no! She uses her sexuality to distract somebody!"

I've seen a few secrets pop up along these lines, and I honestly just don't get what's so engaging about imagining what hypothetical haters would unjustly hate about your favorite canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Sneakers! I have loot from a convention where they were giving promo stuff for it. Such a fun movie. I may need a rewatch soon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought this movie was about magic sneakers.

There are fics for it on AO3 (mostly Karl/Whistler for some reason), but no real active fandom. I loveloveloved this movie when it came out when I was a kid and watched it maybe a dozen times, but I watched it again a few months ago, and man....it does not hold up to the test of time. Mostly because of the outdated technology and by-now-well-worn tropes, like the "watch someone try to trace your signal as it bounces off multiple satellites, omg, you have 10 seconds left before they trace you!!!" kind of thing.

The chemistry between the actors still holds up, though.

The tech was dated and unrealistic even at the time, though. Which made it a great comic movie to watch at MIT, let me tell you. :) And now it's not just dated but retro!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Times like this I'm wishing for a "like" button. I have nothing noteworthy to contribute (besides: Why this sudden increase in secrets with hypothetical haters?), just want to squee a bit over the secret. :) I love that movie!

But fandom in our current terms? It would be full of pre-movie Cosmo/Bishop, Cosmo-apologizers, Cosmo-woobifiers, in better cases the "polite" avoidance of Liz, or worse: rewriting her as an hsyteric OOC drama-queen, obsession about Whistler (I still have it) and/or Carl, "polite" ignoring of Crease, and a few Mother-fan who would write character-centric gen pieces with plot and humor and nobody would read them.

It would be awesome on its own way...
