So? I have a novel and eight shorts based on a mashup of two of my favorite movies. One of those shorts is recently published in a well-regarded, award-winning semi-pro magazine, and I bet no one I haven't told would ever recognize the protag as coming out of the movie he came out of.

I have another short story series that started out as a TV show I basically stole and then warped for my own nefarious purposes. I've written five stories in that series, and two have been published, because it's really got only one thing in common with the source material.

Whatever inspires you. As long as you make it yours, who cares?

Yeah, this.

I don't get people's obsession with rabidly hating on ALL works that filed off the serial numbers, anyway. Any sufficiently AU fanfic is original fic. Once it's been developed enough to stand entirely on its own, big fucking deal how it started out as.

Completely agree. It's definitely not 'plagiarism' by any definition.
