Re: Textbook woes

the worst is when professors make you buy textbooks they wrote, or were written by someone within the university, since those are really hard to find anywhere except the university's bookstore.

if you're needing to buy more easily available books though there are some resources that can help you find your books for way cheaper. i forget what i was using the last few years, but this year i relied on bigwords and found most of my books for like 7-8 bucks apiece. my first year in college i managed to get all my books for $34 total. this year i think it's been more like $120 but that's not that bad, especially considering a lot of students end up spending $600-$2000 a semester on books. it really helps to do price comparisons.

I had a professor one semester assign us Heart of Darkness. (That was it. The only text. For the entire semester of what was supposed to be a broad-spectrum literary analysis class. I hated that class so much.) Should be a breeze, right? Every secondhand store and library on the planet has a copy somewhere. No. He demanded that we use one specific edition that was only available at one particular independent bookstore, which was one of those pretentious little arty places where even if you agree with their politics you want to punch them for being so obnoxious about it. There was absolutely nothing special about this particular edition, no critical insights or revised text, the sole reason we had to use that edition -- and this is from his own mouth, not something I'm speculating on -- was because it was only available in that store and he wanted to make us spend money there.
