Try participating in a writing competition based on a short story by Neil Gaiman, and judged by Neil Gaiman, only to realise that the idea you used is actually something you vaguely remembered from the first Sandman story.

(That would have been very embarrassing if it had happened to me. Luckily I'm sure I misappropriated the memory though.)
