You do realize a country without an army is a country conquered.

No. Not really.

That does not seem to be an observation which is in accordance with the facts of the world around us.

Because everybody else would still have one.

Well, sure, that's the obvious logic, but it seems to ignore (among other things) (1) the existence of militarily weak but unconquered countries (2) the possibilities of defense without a formal army, especially with (a) nuclear power and (b) guerilla warfare, terrorism, and other nonconventional means of resistance. It's a simplistic thing to say and not that meaningful.

Tell that to Iceland...

A small military geared for homeland defense and brownwater deployment might be a necessary evil, but that is still an evil. What we've got now is just plain evil.

No. A country without WMD is a country conquered, probably by America too. America are the black hats now. That is why every country with a lick of sense is ignoring conventional forces and going straight for WMD development before America can turn on them. Everyone has learned the lesson of Iraq and Libya a bit too well.

Don't get it twisted now, America isn't the black hats, anymore than Russia or China are. There's really not that much difference between any of them except that America's a little more powerful right now and Russia and China are a little more in the position of challengers. They're all the great powers and they're acting like great power politics pretty much always do. Strong do what they will, weak do what they must and all that. There's no real non-black hats in great power politics, honestly. I wish it wasn't so, but that's kind of how it is. You're totally right about nuclear weapons, though.

(in passing - you could also possibly include the EU on the list of great powers but they're very strange so who knows what's up with those guys)

No, America is worse. Russia and China don't pretend to be the great champions of freedom, the US does. Its the blatant hypocrisy that pushes America over the edge into full on black hat status.
