Not OP but it's better now than it has been the last 10 years. You never get fired, they pay for your housing and food (and for your spouse and kids, too), they pay for college (including retroactively), and provide free medical and dental care for you and your family. And now the chances of deploying to a combat zone are pretty low and you don't have to move every 2 or 3 years because they changed that, too. You move every 4-6 years now. Oh, and in addition to your initial training, most of the military classes you take that are 40 hours and over count towards college credits and every single class you every take and position you hold counts separately on your resume.

It's not for everyone and I'm the last person to try to convince someone to join if they don't already want to do it, but it's not a bum deal these days at all.

You get to beat up kids, rape women, and torture people all without ever having to go to jail. It's a wonderful job. As a nice bit of icing on the cake, you get to be fetishized as a hero and praised as some sort of good guy instead of a dirty thug whose life ambitions are sadly low, like we all used to know soldiers were. This glorification of the military since 9/11 is really disturbing.

I can't tell if you're a troll or just really fucking stupid.

Or someone who watches the news.

I am female-bodied and understand what I am up against as a result. In addition I do not plan on being in close-combat. Less than 10% of soldiers ever see combat to begin with, I hope you realise.

Your world view is very bleak and skewed and I am sorry that your experiences have led you to such a conclusion.

Why would a woman want to join the US army? You're almost dead cert to get raped in basic training by one of your male colleagues. Are you somehow unaware of the massive problem the US army has with rape within its own ranks?

You're not so good with statistics, are you? Rape rates are high in the Army but my chances of being raped are not "near certain." You aren't going to scare or berate me out of my choice.
