Yes.

Or at the very least, equally rude. Unless this was some massive conspiracy to offend the OP, the rest of the people are gathered there to watch a movie together and hang out. (If it was a big conspiracy, then why would you stay anyway?)

Pulling out a book and sitting reading in the midst of a bunch of people who've asked you there to hang out? Yeah, I'd say that's incredibly bad mannered. I'd certainly never want to invite that person over again.

Like, if you want to make a point about how much you don't want to do what everybody else is there to do, do it by leaving. Don't upset everybody else's night by passive-aggressiving in the corner.
