From chapter 40: "Ymir". This was the greatest act of love I have ever seen in a work of fiction.

Bonus secret: Because of this, I think Ymir is the bravest, most courageous character in the series.

People's reactions seem a bit harsh - well, no, actually a lot harsh. Cliches are cliches because they work; they're the things that affect audiences and that people remember. Besides, different things touch different people - y.m.m.v. with the scene and the manga, but a lot of these replies are kind of unfair.

...Not really getting why people are harshing on you for this? I thought it was really romantic too- not just because of the whole 'sacrificing my life for you', but also because it was Ymir revealing her true nature to Christa and the others for the first time, and outting herself as a monster. Even if she'd survived, she'd never be able to take that back, and it meant risking everyone she knew turning against her including Christa- but she was willing to do that, for a chance at saving her. That's pretty big, especially considering what a jerk Ymir is and how unaffected she tries to come across.

(Though granted, I thought it was even more romantic when Christa then turned around and told Ymir to tear down the tower and to stop worry about protecting everyone and put just herself first like she'd always done before.)

This pretty much. Sacrificing your life might be an old cliche, but sacrificing all your friends and your way of life, knowing they might be scared and disgusted by you, is something else entirely.
