I really want to know when it suddenly became ~inappropriate~ to talk about the kinks we enjoy in the same communities and fandom spaces where we post our porn.

SA

Seriously. It's just feels like it's not fandom anymore if we can't have dub-con and tentacle porn.

That is, have dub-con and tentacle porn without being persecuted for it.

Just read about octopus tentacles, they can still react long after being severed from the body. Tenticles have a mind of their own it seems.

Sometimes it feels like fandom is getting more and more PC lately. I think it's because of the rise of tumblr/SJW's.

Re: This.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The SJW's will jump on everything and anything, so sometimes it's just safer to keep that stuff a secret.

It is because there are a lot more sheltered kids getting online. Children and older teens who were extremely sheltered often see things in strict black and white terms, unable to apply context or flexible understanding, often shout the loudest about sex and social mores that unsettle them.

Oh it must be those dreadful SJWs!

Seriously? I'm an "SJW" and I'm kinky as fuq, like all my friends. Sure, you got your radfems, but a hell of a lot of people who are naive, sheltered, privileged, etc are also all up in arms about something that sounds unconventional and dangerous to them. It's the freethinking queers and so forth who are likely to take issue with sexism, homophobia, kinkphobia and so on online, hence SJWs according to you.

Re: This.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not all SJWs are the same and it's not fair to lump them all, but arguably it's the rise in that whole culture that's brought about a more, I guess, policed fandom. I remember back in the earlier 2000's when the internet was widely accepted as the epicenter of depravity, it's interesting how different it is now.

DA.

but arguably it's the rise in that whole culture that's brought about a more, I guess, policed fandom.

Yes, I completely agree with this - I'm sure there's other factors that may play in as well, but the SJW culture certainly has drastically changed fandom interaction.

I'm interested in hearing more about your experiences on this.

I've been in various online fandoms since 1998, and while the jargon and tech has changed I can honestly say that there's not a single way in which my ability to squee, kink, fic, critique or porn has been curtailed by the social-awareness turn in meta.

There were ever wankers and assholes, but that's obviously not what everyone here is talking about with the constant talk of fear of reprisal and "SJWs" making them unsafe.

What is it that's actually happening? And where? Who are the people who are losing their access to fannish spaces through policing and what happens when they try to set up new ones? Since the vast majority of fen aren't "SJWs", what can we do to help?

Re: This.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-31 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, the anti-"SJW" circlejerk. You do realize there's more whining about SJW's than there is actual problems with them, right? And that social justice is actually a good thing, right?

No, of course not, all you're all seeing is that it's not free-for-all asshole time anymore. "oh noes someone on the internet wants me to let them know my fanfic is about things that upset them!! wwwaaaaaaahhhhhh"

Social justice is when people can work, love, enjoy legal rights and protections, and not have crimes and abuse visited upon them because of the demographic they belong to.

Whining that you came across something you personally find disturbing on the open Internet is not social justice. It's just whining. Can't handle the perils of the Wild West? Stay back East. I'm sure Facebook, Google Plus or AOL would love to have you.

Hence the differentiation between SJ and SJW. The latter being widely regarded as the problem. Sorry if you didn't understand that.
