As far as "perception of intelligence" goes, you can also argue that, in most day-to-day situations, you form your first impressions long before you learn how much time someone spent in school. And in my experience, people tend to be all over the map when it comes to common sense/communication skill/general knowledge/"sharpness"/etc., regardless of amount of formal education completed. And different people can form different impressions of the same person. One man's "quick-witted and outspoken" is another's "loud-mouthed dumbass," and so on.

The second point about the same woman with and without makeup is kind of similar, actually!

...Don't mind me. Just nattering on because I think this is all kinda interesting. :P
