JET does look interesting, I bookmarked it. I know you need money to live on, but are there any odd things you have to pay for your first month? Did you work in Japan?

I applied for JET in 2005, ended up in northern Japan and loved it. I've done other stuff since then, and recently returned to the US from a different part of Japan.

Rent and travel are paid for, but depending on where you are, they could take it out of your pay, or they might ask for cash and then reimburse you. Housing with subsidised rent is provided, but what is in the house varies by area. I can't remember how much cash I took with me, much less than the suggested amount, I do remember using my credit card to buy a bed.
