My love for this movie is more for the content than the quality

The overwhelmingly vast majority of movies - especially teen movies - tend to send certain messages about sex and sexuality, high school popularity, friendship, all of that. This movie took a lot of those overtired messages, cliches, and stereotypes, called them on their bullshit, and turned them on their heads. It pointed out, very starkly, the dichotomy of "boy having sex is celebrated, while girl having sex is reviled", and the real impact of being (un)popular at school, that it's not just a hollow or superficial social status but can have serious impact on your daily life at school. It's a movie that really delved deep into some serious, heavy duty social issues that face teen girls today, without being condescending or preachy or grave - something which I've found quite lacking when it comes to teen comedies, especially the better-known ones. The literary humor in it was a pretty big bonus, too, even if a lot of it when right over people's heads.

So honestly, my appreciation of it is less about how it stands on its own and more about how it stands in context, against other movies of its kind.
