Which of his plays have you seen performed and by whom? Don't go for the *big* performances, they are always waaaaaaay to conscious that they are playing SHAKESPEARE(!). Go for the indie performances of his more obscure plays and you'll probably get it a lot better. I've seen a lot Shakespeare, and the yawn inducing plays are the famous ones like R&J, 12thN, MoV, MacB etc, performed by the big name actors on well appointed sets.

The indie troupes on sparse sets doing his less commonly performed plays in small theatres (or even open air performances, or on one occasion in a bar) really rock (and "rock" is the best description too, you got to be able to hear the rhythm of the dialogue). Never go to a high school performance though, oh god that was painful. However Shakespeare wrote to be performed and not to be written.

This!

My absolute favorite Shakespeare play is Cymbelline, and almost no one even knows it exists. But my love really comes from the open air performance I saw a few years ago.
