I just got a friend hooked on Leverage, and in describing it's appeal to her I realized that one of the main attractions for me is the competence porn. Everyone being REALLY really good at what they do, elaborate plans that work even when they fail, smart people being smart and coming out on top (except against Sterling, because he is a magnificent bastard and He Always Wins)

So: rec me your favourite competence porn!

haha, basically, the extreme satisfaction you get from watching people being really good at what they do.

like, "Holy shit, look at that badass hack that computer. That's so hot. SHEEEIT he totally just PWND that guy with his knowledge of horticulture! Get it, you BAMF."

Ooooh okay I gotcha. :D I totally get this way over characters in video games fighting and pulling off a rather insane/stylish/impossible move (that usually results in a kill). At least I think that counts.

I would highly recommend Burn Notice. The voice-over instructions/explanations of random spy-shit are a major highlight, but the writing in general is really tight in my opinion.

2nd

All I can say is that my attraction to Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon went from 0 to 250 the second he started getting that calm pilot's voice while riding Toothless. He's just so damned good about learning how to fly.

Also I'm aware it's weird but I kind of love Hank Hill when he's doing his job. He just takes pride in his work and does shit right.

That's one of the many reasons I enjoy The Americans so much. Those two spies are just so damn skilled at their job. (I also loved Leverage for the competence porn.)

+1 for the Americans. I still haven't gotten over Elizabeth getting in the car in the finale. No hesitation, no questions about what's going on, just pure understanding of what she does and what can go awry.

Tom Hiddleston. But that is more like competence envy. HOW IS HE SO GOOD AT EVERYTHING?

Occasionally one of them is a damsel in distress if the plot requires, but they never both hold the idiot ball at once, and usually they are incredibly professional. The professionalist.

I haven't seen it in a while, but this was something I remember liking about the Ghost in the Shell TV series.

Scott & Bailey! I'm like a broken record on this, but it's a show full of (mostly women) police officers doing police work properly and doing it well. Everyone's a consummate professional. And if their private lives start interfering in their work at all it's evident that that's a fuck up. It subverts all the bad-policing tropes of genre detective shows, and I love it.

Is this on Netflix? Where can one check it out?

"Wonders of the Universe" with Prof Brian Cox. Unf.

I love this too anon.. My favourite version of it is when the hero gets knocked down and the villain is gloating over their victory, but then the hero gets back up again and even stronger than anyone expected - DBZ 'Over 9000!!!111' moments basically, lol.

Anyway, I'd recommend Star Trek TOS and nu!Trek, just so you can read Genius!Kirk and Geniuser!Spock fic and revel in their awesomeness. If you like Leverage and haven't seen Ocean's 11/12/13, get on that. Human Target is also great for this and similarish to Leverage in tone - cancelled too soon :( Stargate: Atlantis has some elements of this when Rodney does his thing as the smartest person in two galaxies, and John saves everyone from everything (though they screw up plenty as well). And a mini shout out to the movie Sky High for this as well.

I love Trek, don't get me wrong, but TOS is like the opposite of competence porn. In The Naked Time, some redshirt beams down in a hazmat suit, takes off his glove, touches some stuff, and then reaches under his mask to scratch his nose before putting the damn glove back on. Even if the fic you're talking about is the competence-porniest stuff ever, the source material can be a real competence-bonerkiller.
