Eh, I have a copy of his complete works. I've never read any of it.

If I want Shakespeare, I'll track down a movie version and watch it. It's easier to absorb that way.

That's because it was written to be watched, not read. It's theatre (and movies now, obviously). The spectacle is part of the experience.

There's nothing wrong with not liking Shakespeare, obviously. But I think people should give some of the better movies (or see it live, if possible) a shot before writing everything off completely.

Someone upthread likened it to LotR that way. A lot of people just can't read the LotR books, but are able to absorb the movies just fine. My mother is one of them (she attempted again to read The Hobbit and stalled at the trolls).

People who can only absorb LotR in movie form are morons though. LotR was meant to be read, not viewed. If you can only view it then you are brain damaged from too much tv and too little reading.

Well aren't you a bitchy little elitist? Tolkien's style does not suit everybody. He is just old enough and formal enough to be far too dry for some readers. It has nothing to do with ability to read and everything to do with reading tastes.

Exactly. I'm sure there's some scientific reasoning on how people process information differently and all that, that would apply wonderfully.

I think it's all a matter of writing styles. Not everyone can read the same styles, so if they want to know the material, they have to find another way to understand it that is more to their tastes.
