ayrt

It's not. It's a spin off book that's more faithful to the show than the comics were but it violates show canon all over the place as well.

Except that the producers and creator of the show have acknowledged it as canon so...

Link? I can't remember anything along those lines. I own the book and it's not accurate to the show. It's an entertaining read but not fully accurate.

Though for me canon is what's on the show plain and simple. Nothing else, not interviews or comics or spin off novels or blogs or anything.

Producers violate canon a lot, the whole Henry Winchester thing for example. In 4x03, Henry was alive (Mr. D tells John to give his best to Henry), John's dad didn't just vanish.

He didn't say Henry specifically, he said "your old man" or something. His mother could have remarried.

That's true, but it doesn't explain why the writers had Sam remember going to the Grand Canyon in S8 as a cherished childhood moment when it was brought up as a major point on Dean's bucket list as things they'd never done back in earlier seasons. The writers and producers are only human and they screw up as much as anyone else.
