I feel the same way about Whitman.

With the caveat that I also find him (Whitman) to be an obnoxious blowhard who can suck it and I find my English department's fascination and worship of him to be incredibly frustrating.

In reply to your actual secret: you don't have to like The Bard to enjoy writing plays.

I. Hate. Transcendentalism.

I'm an architecture student. I don't like the work of Frank Lloyd Wright for several reasons, including its clunky, oppressive aesthetic and general impracticality. Everyone in the entire architecture department of my college, and all the other archy majors, basically worship old Frank as a god and practically want to have sex with Fallingwater, so I feel your pain.

In engineering school, we used to make fun of Frank Lloyd Wright. The consensus is "pretty good architect, pretty shit engineer." (And by that, of course, we mean the fact that a lot of his designs had to be reinforced later because they weren't sound structures to begin with.) :D

My hatred of Whitman was cemented in high school forever, when I first read 'When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer.' Being a science geek with an interest in literature, I was furious at what struck me as a paean to willful ignorance, and the idea that learning about something saps the beauty from it.

I think I tried to make my own scathing parody, about an esteemed philosopher or poet or something like that, but darned if I can remember it now.
