I was about 30 (this was about 12 years ago now!) I had read the Harry Potter books and some fanfiction, and--not sure if I should be ashamed to admit this or not--my first fanfic was written because the stuff I was finding online was often so GODAWFUL I was certain I could do much better on my first attempt. (Twelve years later, though I'm now well aware of the cliches and noob mistakes in that first unfinished multi-chapter epic, I stand by that assessment. It was hardly Pulitzer material, but overall, it didn't suck.)

I tend to prefer shorter pieces generally, generate my own plot bunnies or be inspired by meta, random events or exchanges, and to stick with one fandom at a time. Been some time since I wrote anything longer than a drabble, though.
