Re: What's the most recent book you've read and hated?

I usually don't read books unless they're high recommended, by an author I already know, etc, so I don't usually come across ones that I hate.

That said, last summer I reread Tamora Pierce's Terrier which I loved as much I did the first time I read it, and then I continued on to read Bloodhood for what I thought was the first time. I slowly realized that I had read it before, I'd just been so unimpressed that I'd forgotten. And I sort of get what Pierce was trying to do, throwing in this huge romantic subplot and building up this guy that just eventually dumps the main character because, hey, that happens in real life and sometimes you just gotta keep moving. But it was still 100+ of random boring romance shenanigans that went NOWHERE.

Which, not to mention, by focusing so much on this floptastic love interest, the villain really felt like an afterthought. I forget if there was no foreshadowing and she came out of left field or if she was so obvious from the get-go that it was almost like a red herring. That's how unremarkable she was. I read the book twice and remember barely anything about her.

Just be thankful you didn't read Mastiff too. It makes Bloodhound look like a masterpiece in comparison.

That entire series was just a letdown. In Terrier, Tammy set up a really cool world that was like the Tortall she had written about before, but also different and created a whole bunch of awesome characters. And then she preceded to use almost none of that in the next books and made some really weird plot decisions.

FUCKING MASTIFF what even happened there it seemed like she completely forgot all the previous characterization from the other books of the guy who turned out to be the villain I was so confused
I loved Terrier so much, Bloodhound was okay, but what was Mastiff

I knew who the villain was going in, and I was like 'what?' when I read the spoilers, but I had faith in Tammy because surely she wouldn't just throw away all of her characterization in a last minute plot twist. She would build up to the reveal and it would be clever and well thought out. And then I read it and realized how very wrong I was.

Yeah, I think a read a summary or two of Mastiff and I remember it sounding like it was not my thing. Protector of the Small has so far been my favorite out of everything she's done. Everything since then I've enjoyed, but not as much as that quartet.

It's probably a wise move not to read it. I love Protector of the Small, but my favorite is a tie between Song of the Lioness and the Immortals.
