Re: AO3 tags that make you cringe

Genuine question, because I'll be posting a fic soon and was wondering about tagging it, are you fine with just the tag "sex" and the pairing as clearly slash? Or do you hate that, too, because the pairing and the explicit rating should be enough? Is it the same with BJs and handjobs or frot? Or is it just that particular tag?

there's a 99% chance it's gonna be in the story if it's E-rated slash so why bother

Cliche but true. :/ Idk, I love slash but I'm not that into anal, so I've been writing everything but that for the last while.

(I think the 'sex' tag is just...how could it be anything but clutter if you're posting an E-rated fic?)

I HATE boys kissing.

You reminded me of this and now I'm sharing it for no real particular reason.

Any of the tags that are about the author's existence. "Author is evil," "lol so drunk when I wrote this," "all my cries," etc. They're still mostly tumblr style tags, but they're the only ones that really bother me.

This. Instant backbutton inducer. Translates as "badfic".

Oh yes, the author's autobiography, I hate those too. "I cried when I wrote this", "don't hate me", "my friends thought this was good", and my not-favorite "I can't write summaries". Then practice and learn how to write them! Otherwise I'm going to think that you can't write fics either.

This so much. Also, the tags where the author is writing a paragraph so that the commas result in utterly bizarre and totally stupid tags like, "but I stayed up til morning" or something. Put it in the notes people!

And I wish more people would use the anal sex tag because there is no rating or pairing that automatically guarantees anal sex, not even slash pairings. Homosexual sex =/= anal sex. And sometimes I just want to read about anal sex.

I get that, if you're really into reading a certain method of screwing. I just chalk up any sexifying between the characters I like as a win. Frottage, anal, oral, psychic (not...really...)

Re: AO3 tags that make you cringe

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of any? I use the tags to find things I like and filter out what I don't, so as long as the tags are about the content instead of how the author feels, I love them.

MTE. I love the "blatantly OOC" tag because then I don't have to read that stuff. I only wish people were required to use it when they're fic is blatantly OOC.

And of course I meant "their fic" not "they're," but my phone had other ideas and I didn't notice in time.

i just hate it when they don't mark something as 'AU,' mostly because i hate most AUs. i don't want to read about these characters baking at a high school party spaceship coffee shop in the middle of hogwarts with the winchesters like shit goddamn tag your AUs

'Blatantly OOC' - idk, I'm okay with honest tags like these so at least people can avoid the fic if they so choose? Same with any other blatant tags like 'anal sex.' But that's just me.

Aside from the tumblr style of tagging, I mostly just get annoyed by people mis-tagging things. Like adding a pairing tag when that pairing is mentioned in like one sentence of a multichapter fic and that's it. Basically: misleading tags.

Re: AO3 tags that make you cringe

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kind of my feeling on "Blatant OOC". Like a part of me thinks it's stupid to advertise that, because that's something I want to avoid as a writer, but then it's also something I want to avoid as a reader, so I'm glad it's been tagged for. Plus, at least then I get some comfort in knowing the author REALIZES it's OOC and they aren't completely delusion w/r/t the canon/characters in question.

I feel you on "Blatantly OOC"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's like "why would you tag that...it's like you're asking me not to read your fic?"

Also another one like that for me is "____-bashing" like in harry Potter fandom there are people who openly admit to Weasley bashing or Hermione-bashing. At least they're nice enough to warn so I don't read that shit.

Re: I feel you on "Blatantly OOC"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's the whole point of the tags, so people know that it's in the fic. That way people can avoid it if they want and find if they want. This idea of people complaining about tags that aren't tumblr style tags is ridiculous.

I've always been annoyed by the "women being awesome" for some reason

the "character of color" kind of annoys me a bit. yeah, I know Stacker is black, thanks. it's like putting a "blonde character" tag on something. I've also just never like the whole "person of color" thing that's become popular but maybe it's because I live in the deep south, and people throwing around the word "colored" is something I hear on occasion (mostly from older people). I think my mom would smack someone if they called her a woman of color, just because when she was growing up she was constantly demeaned by being called "colored".

Re: AO3 tags that make you cringe

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
The "Chromatic character" tag bugs me because it's just strange to search for fic based on race. Just because I like Nyota Uhura from ST doesn't mean I'm going to like Tiana from Princess and the Frog. It seems unintentionally racist to me.

I don't get the "characters of color" tag at all. Do people actively seek out/avoid fics for that? Plus the way it lumps everybody not-white together... I just have this weird feeling every time I see it.

things like "Original Female Character of Color"... soooo special snowflake-y. I scroll right by after having a good eye-roll.
