Vaginal Fantasy Books.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
What do y'all think of this sub genre of books?

I so very much want to like it, Female protagonist in a fantasy setting kicking ass, but the romance always kills it for me.

I mean, if it's not a terrible portrayal of what kind of guys I'm supposed to find attractive (No, alpha males are douchebags, and Beta males are spinless whimps, and why is it always a fucking love triangle?!? Let's just have 1 normal likable love interest that is not a walking stereotype of what is supposed to be attractive for the most number of people. When did Daniel Steel become the template for vaginal fantasy romance? Ugh.) it's that there is so much emotional garbage, "Oh I hate him but I love him, let's spend the next fifty frigging pages analysing that instead of actually doing something interesting.

Oh, and it's never a lesbian vaginal fantasy which might avoid the pitfalls of the unlikable dude love interest. Anything lesbian get's labelled as "Erotica" regardless of how lovie dovie / sexy it is.

Well, those are my thoughts. What about you guys?

I read the subject line and thought "Hah, I get to comment saying I originally read the subject line as Vaginal Fantasy Books," and then I reread to see what it actually said and... I have never heard of this before. Are we calling bodice-rippers this now?

It's a term coined for this online book club with Veronica Belmont, Bonnie Burton, Felicia Day and another girl who I don't recognise.

Get thee to you tube.

In spite of my problems with then genre, its actually quite a fun set of videos.

Yeah, that's really an awful name. What's so wrong with just "erotica"?

In the Vaginal fantasy group we read a lesbian book a couple months ago, so I think those still qualify. but I find most people don't even know the term period unless they are a Felicia Day fan.

I'd...never heard of it. The name isn't doing it any favors; it makes me think that it's centered around vagina-centric fantasy, where it's JUST the vagina as opposed to it being about a person who happens to have a vagina.

And those are my two cents on the subject.

I really hate the "alpha male" and "beta male" idea. How about giving your characters actual personalities instead of just types?

And I could never stand the male love interests in any kind of romance novel.

My vagina fantasizes about drinking beer. Possibly because I am now drinking beer for the first time in a long time. Ah, beer.

As long as you're not drinking beer with your vagina.

I'd love THAT tag to exist on AO3: "beer swigging vagina"

Hrm... Kristen Britain and her Green Rider series is pretty good about this. Female protagonist kicking ass, but while she falls for a man she can't have (le sigh) he's neither an alpha nor a beta and from the looks of it she just straight up isn't going to get him, and while she regrets that occasionally it never takes up, like, 50 pages or anything. Maybe a handful of scattered paragraphs in the entire book series. The focus is on the action.
