Most atheists are agnostic, and lots and lots of agnostics are atheist. There's not even remotely mutually exclusive. People who use the term agnostic are often atheists who dislike the term atheist because they equate it with "asshole".

But by definition, if you don't believe in a deity of any kind you are atheist whether you like it or not. Agnosticism has nothing to do with belief; if someone asks what you believe and you reply "agnostic" you're not answering the question. Because theist and atheists alike can be agnostic... and most are.

Yep, I agree. A good reason for calling yourself agnostic is if you're a fan of Huxley or Spencer (and if you've not read either, you probably are unqualified to call yourself one.)

A bad reason for calling yourself agnostic is "atheists are ___." And depending on what the second half of that sentence contains, it's reasonable to point out that the speaker is apparently ignorant, a bigot, or both.
