I agree a bit. My OC always proves to be worse but honestly, I've stopped reading fics with OCs in them at all as a main character. They're never good.

Objection!

OCs work really great with outsider POV fics. Canon characters work as well, but with OCs you can literally do anything. And there are a lot of good OC outsider POV fics.

Outsider point of view? You mean angsty teenager who sees how to "fix" all the issues the canon characters have so the author can show how totally awesome they are?

Yeah...I guess OCs would work well in that genre, well as a redflag for that genre at least.

I don't know what outsider POV fics you've been reading, but I've never even seen one like you described? It's usually an outsider's view/interpretation of a canon character/relationship between canon characters. Like a HP fic told from the POV of a muggle, or a classmate's musings on the Digidestined, seeing the Winchester brothers through the eyes of a victim they saved/law enforcement/Sam's old classmates/etc.

If "angsty teenager who fixes all the issues" is all the outsider POV fic you've ever read you're really missing out. There's some really great fic out there. (I'm a huge fan of outsider POV, can you tell?)

I actually read a pretty cute/funny HP fanfic about a girl in Harry's class who just kept getting her education fucked up by all of Harry's and Voldemort's antics.

I would spam with links except I lost my bookmarks when my laptop died last year. I linked a HP fic told from a muggle's POV upthread to poisonenvy if you're interested.

SPN had some great outsider POV fic. I should really try and find those again...

My favorite is the minor/unnoticed character OC pov -- the waitress who notices the main character(s) doing something particularly sweet; the cabbie who overhears an interesting conversation and remembers it most for the unusually large tip. That sort of thing.

Oh, yes. That reminds me of that SPN fic told from the POV of a Starbucks barista who tries to figure out Sam and Dean's deal when she overhears them talking about a case. I really, really need to get back all those bookmarks I lost when my laptop died.

Hey! It's my experience that fanfiction is shit written by people who have no talent whatsoever, so now I'm gonna trash every piece of fanfiction ever written, because clearly my experience can be extrapolated to everything within a particular category!

If you write fanfiction, then you are clearly a talentless hack! I mean, I guess fanfiction works, as a redflag for failure at least.

Pokemon fandom? Pokemon fandom has some GOOD OCs - Original Trainer fics are a genre that consists almost entirely of OCs, and they're done extremely well. Look up fics like Pedestal!
