His character arc felt real to me, perhaps because I've known people like Gary IRL and so his years of simmering anger and resentment was so understandable to me, as well as the exasperated fondness buried underneath it all despite himself. The reveal of why they stopped being friends was pretty heavy, I agree, and so did why Gary got them together again in the first place, but for some reason contrasting tones worked for me. I think mainly because Gary and Andy's was such a believable relationship, which was part due to the writing and part the acting.

He felt totally real to me too! I think I was a bit sensitive to the teetotaller thing because of my own family, and when that went nowhere along with the other serious subplots it just felt unresolved to me? I want to know more!
