I kind of said it in a comment above, but I think I dismissed him in my mind because his characters were a bit cartoonish (as per the tone of the films, not a criticism) in SotD and Hot Fuzz - so I definitely wasn't expecting to completely believe and partially identify with his character in this. I think I might go and watch Hot Fuzz again myself!
