It's easier to publish something that started off as fanfic because it comes with both a ready-made network and a ready-made audience.

...no, it's really not, especially if you're an obscure genfic writer instead of a BNF who writes smut. I would love to know in what world getting anything published (other than self-published) is easy, or even easier. Because in plenty of publishing circles, being a fanfic writer is an active handicap.
