Oh god yeah. Not the same fandom, but still the amount of fics that used have their summary begin "[OC/Self-Insert name] is an American teenager who has moved to Japan....." or "... an American teenager who has just moved to Britain". And in a few cases "An american teenager who divorced their parents and moved to [wretched hive of scum and villainy]-city".

Thank god the tide has generally died down, although the new version seems to be "a US Marine who stumbled into...".

I swear if I never see any of those again, well if I never see any more again I'll be a happy girl. Please writers if your fic starts with any variant of one of those chop off your fingers to keep them away from your keyboard.
