What series would you say is most evocative of classic CLAMP? I recently bought their manga The One I Love and found it a little old-fashioned and lacking focus. Perhaps Rayearth?

For me, Tokyo Babylon resonated in my heart the most because of its dark and brooding themes of decline in society (prostitution, lack of humanity, religious imperialism). Also, I think that Man of Many Faces did a very good job in terms of themes of love without going to sugary/rainbows like CCS. I didn't really like Rayearth that much, and therefore didn't read much, so I missed any profound meanings.

CLOVER was very profound as well, but that manga didn't attach well with me.

And you?

I haven't read or watched anything enough to be super sure... I know the most about Rayearth and can infer from it the humor and the elegant character designs that CLAMP is sort of famous for.

Yeah, Rayearth is a really good example of classic CLAMP- it shows off the sense of humor that CLAMP used to have- cute, sweet, and based on puns and such. But now, it seems more snarky than cute.

It may be telling that I haven't been able to finish anything other than The One That I Love, and that because it was so short that none of the stories ever take off.
