14 I've been making the Star Wars prequels/FFVII Compilation comparison for a while, no one ever seems to agree with me. xD

But as a fan of both... it's not that Phantom Menace or Dirge ruined my love for the originals. It's that I simply hate them by themselves. Obnoxious awful money grubbing and retarded sequels/prequels that consist of directors too busy playing with pretty graphics to even remember what their original canon felt like don't make me hate the original of anything. I sort of feel that a lot of the fans who claim that the Compilation ruined FFVII for them are probably exaggerating things, or they weren't the biggest FFVII fans in the first place. Or perhaps they just haven't replayed it in too long, and they've forgotten why they liked it.

I'm replaying FFVII right now - I started just yesterday - for the first time in five years. And I love it just as much as ever.

I've made some of the FFVII secrets here, and I've participated in the discussions for them. And a lot of us Compilation haters don't hate the original game because of the Compilation. In fact, I even don't hate all of the Compilation. I sort of like CC. Actually, if Genesis weren't in it, I think I'd actually really like it. Maybe I just have a thing for the tragic prequels, because the only Star Wars prequel I liked was Revenge of the Sith.

18. You and me both. Not to the Gaston thing, but the guys my self-inserts fell in love with were usually the worst sort possible. And funny thing, my boyfriends always turn out to be that sort of guy once I get to know them better.

I just... get this impression, from secrets and from replies, that it's totally ruining some people's love for something, which is so sad. And it seems like they're taking it out on other people who do like it and are scaring off new fans, which is sad. Although I dislike the prequels, and it's kind of wtf when you meet someone who hasn't seen the original trilogy, my reaction to that is "oh, so you like Star Wars? Hey, me too! Let me show you these other three awesome movies..."

I did come into FFVII fandom through the new stuff, but like I said in my secret, I can totally understand how the old school fans feel, because I'm the same way with the original triology. I've just never been able to understand all the hatewaves radiating from people who seem to be SO OBSESSED with hating the compilation. It's kind of like "well, you don't like it, but it exists, so nothing's going to change that. plz to be moving on!" For me it was like -- OMG JarJar, Anakin says 'yippee,' pod-racing lasts forever, too many CGI fish, thus Phantom Menace DVD never sees light of day, and that was that.

Honestly, I think the only time when I got pissed at the prequels was when I was looking for good original trilogy stuff and everything was coming up Anakin/Obi-Wan. (And personally I don't mind money-grubbing so much because I love buying fandom merch, although I'm ashamed of it a bit. D: *looks at action figure shelf and poster collection and blushes*)

(I actually liked Revenge of the Sith, too!)

I can't speak for everyone, but it certainly doesn't ruin MY love of the original game.

There are fundamental differences in your fandom and mine, though. In SW fandom, it's not like 75% of the fans watched only the prequels and then based their entire characterizations of the original trilogy cast on what they saw in the prequels and what they read on Wikipedia. Beyond that, the prequels were just that -- prequels. Any character assassination or inconsistency can be explained by the generation gap in the two movies. In FFVII fandom? Two years pass, and everything gets fuck all retarded.

I'm not obsessed with hating on Comp, but I like arguing and f!s is kind of my only outlet :)

Actually, if we're talking out-of-character badfic written by new fans, Darth Vader is kind of ruined these days. He used to be such a badass, "come join me," Rebel-slaying kind of dude, and now I look for fic and Darth Vader is crying emo tears and wibbling about Padme and just wishing he could join those loveable rebels and be with his beloved son. Poor Darth Vader, he didn't want to be evil. Bzuh!?

And although it pisses me off, whenever I see it I just close out the fic and move on. Although I have given up on Star Wars fic, really. I think I read all the older, awesome stuff I wanted to read, and everything now has Darth Vader boo-hooing into his helmet. Same thing in FFVII. I see Reno being constantly drunk and behaving like an assclown and I just... close the fic and back away.

I mean, I understand that it is upsetting, and it does boggle my mind when I see secrets here going "I'm only in this fandom for the pretty boys kekeke/I write fic after only seen AC and no one knows kekeke," but windows can be closed, certain communities can be avoided... fanfiction.net can be skirted around totally like a diseased animal... ;) I just like to save myself the grief rather than worry about what the more ignorant fans are up to, really. When I first got into FFVII fandom (about a year ago), I did a lot of wading through horrible stuff, but then, after some trial and error, I found my favorite authors and just friended their journals. I avoid most of the LJ comms like the plague now. Star Wars fic, I haven't really read in years. It seems like no one really writes the original trilogy these days, it's all Anakin and Obi-Wan. Alas!

Sorry, I rambled.

One character altered for the worse. VII fandom is literally EVERYONE.

I shouldn't have to friend a grand total of five-ish authors, avoid 90% of all LJ comms, not even BOTHER with FFN. You make it sound like it's completely tolerable, and when only 10% if even that of fandom is available to me in my quest to avoid Comp shit or shit tainted by Comp shit, it's really not. This wouldn't even be an issue if Comp fandom was completely divided from original game fandom, but it's not. Instead of splitting it, it just infected and ruined the fandom.

I've been in fandom almost all of the ten years it's been out, and you can imagine the heartbreak at seeing one's primary and gateway fandom with so much time poured into it ruined by stupid fangirls and Nomura being a brainless twat. I'm not angry, just disappointed.

I also lurk in SW fandom, and while yeah a lot of it's all about Obi-Wan and Anakin or the more tolerable Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, it's way way way way better.
