Um, I hate to break it to you, but K/S was a pretty huge deal even back in the frickin' 1970s.

If anything, STiD is one of the things that finally put a dent in a long-lived, popular ship.

I don't see it that way? ^_^;
After the movie, all the fuss I saw on tumblr was particularly from the K/S fans and not really anyone else. S/U were content that it was still canon, but nothing else. K/S are vocal fans, for sure.

Just because you don't see it that way doesn't mean it isn't true. K/S fan fic was floating around the very early Star Trek Cons. It was a thing before the internet made shipping cool.
