There is also a good argument to be made for his lack of education and failure to understand the long-term consequences of waiting. Hugo describes it best - as an animal who takes the chance to escape a trap.

He's not stupid, though. A lack of education doesn't mean you reach adulthood without a basic grasp of consequence. Hell he was arrested in the first place, he KNEW about consequence and how incredibly harsh they were about the slightest things. So yeah I still think it's a flaw that he did it anyway knowing it would just make things worse.
