Come on, you're really going to tell me that Final Frontier doesn't insult peoples' intelligence?

That's this movie, for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDf2-EfMRAM

Seriously?

It's a bad movie. Get over it. It's not like Star Trek was some perfect, shining franchise before this. This is a series that contained Spock's Brain. This is a series that contained Code of Honor. Final Frontier. Not to mention Threshold. Threshold! Threshold, people! It's a bad movie, but it's not like it's unique in being a bad thing with the Star Trek name. It doesn't ruin the franchise any more than any of those things did. Getting all angry about it like it's besmirching the good name of Star Trek is just silly, as is saying that you have to be stupid to like it.

Star Trek has always been a franchise with bad stuff, goofy stuff, dumb stuff, all different kinds of stuff. Now there's another movie that's pretty bad. Move on and ignore it like you ignore all the other stupid, crappy parts of Star Trek. Just... move on.

NO Star Trek will ever come closer to insulting the viewer's intelligence than Final Frontier. Though the first and last seasons of TNG came close.

I'm actually gonna have to give it to ST:TNG season 1, simply because that was 25 hours of poop, versus ST V's only 2 hours of poop. Plus, I had popcorn in the movie theatre, and that eased the pain a bit.

The sheer length is a good point, I'll give you that, but I think that V just managed to concentrate the insult more.

(Funny thing is, I like V more than any TNG but the middle three seasons - it's stupid as hell, but it pushes it to the point of being kind of funny, whereas TNGS1 (and 7, IMO) just languishes in terribleness.)

I've seen Star Trek Voyager, but I haven't seen TNG yet (planning to!) What's so awful about it?

There's nothing quite so bad as the plot of V (though The Naked Now managed to be my favorite episode of the season (ie, the only one I can rewatch) by getting very very close to it by having Data get 'drunk', and the whole Wesley bit), mostly just weak writing, and a bit too much of an excuse for Roddenberry to spout his ideology.

I've never been sure if ST:TNG season 1 was insulting the viewer or insulting itself with the viewer as collateral damage. Either way, you have a point about it being many more hours of bad.

Most of the suckiness of the first season can be laid right at the door of the WGA strike going on at the time. They were pretty much scrambling for any possible scripts, so that meant that a lot of shit was green-lighted that possibly wouldn't have been otherwise.

I say "possibly", given that I'm keeping in mind that Threshold exists and there sure wasn't a writer's strike going on to excuse that piece of shit.

But I still love Star Trek, despite its missteps because the franchise still did so much for science fiction television and is such a survivor, despite all the crap that's been thrown at it over the decades. It's got heart, it's got lofty ideals, and it's explored ground that no mainstream SF really ever had before.

Of course, I also kinda enjoyed STiD. It wasn't the most brilliant film ever, but it was fun to watch and I had a good time doing so. People not liking it is fine and dandy, but please don't assume that you speak for everyone in the fandom, or that liking or not liking the movie reflects anything about those fans other than that they liked or didn't like a movie. Fandom's already riddled with more than enough in-fighting and stupidly elitist shit, thanks.

The writers strike coupled with them not having their footing yet as a show. And yet I love it, even the first season with its bad.

I'm going to assume that last paragraph was aimed not at me but the thread in general.

Sorry I'm so late to the party, but one of the reasons I've been not getting around to properly watching all TNG's 7 seasons is precisely because I know how teeth-grittingly awful season 1 is. D:
