That was my first con, too.

I did an incredibly half-assed plays Dr. Rick Dagless, M.D. to placate them.

People like that are annoying! Why can't people in the same group do different things? What's the problem with that?

That's amazing. Well done.

(Really, though, isn't a half-assed Rick Dagless, MD cosplay much more in keeping with the nature of the character?)

Half-assed in that it was functionally impossible to recognize.

I was "girl in black shirt, purple tie and lab coat."

D: oh no I hope you didn't feel pressured to do the Jane cosplay too

Are all your friends cosplayers? Even so, it's kinda weird that the insistence upon doing it is so intense.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Cosplaying can definitely be fun, yeah, but it's not the be end all and be all of cons. I'm sorry that your friends don't seem to respect your wishes.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just really, really wanted to cosplay but were afraid and wanted you to do it too and go with them so they didn't feel alone or awkward. If it wasn't their first con or first time cosplaying at a con, then yeah, they shouldn't have insisted like that, sorry.

P.S. I cosplay and I have never been hugged for it or even asked for a hug. I consider this a good thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm usually only asked for hugs at anime cons. Well, okay, there was the one time at Dragoncon when I was Ariel and a 6 year old girl asked for a hug, but that's different.

I'm sorry to hear it, OP. I hope they come to understand and respect your wishes on the matter.

(They actually bought you a cosplay? Wow, that's pretty damn insistent.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the opposite problem. I wanted to cosplay but the friend I was going with was the type who made fun of cosplayers to the point I didn't. Thankfully, I don't think I had as stressful situation you had but it did hurt whenever he said something negative and I was just jealous of the cosplayers.

Next time, I say I won't care...but I don't know what I'll do.

I find it sad that someone who wants to go to a con makes fun of cosplayers. Your friend is odd.

I'm sorry, that's annoying. I love cosplay, but I often go to cons and hang out with friends who don't want to participate in it. And that's fine. It's not like you can't have fun with someone if you're not in cosplay.

Usually when I first go to cons, I like to explore and look at things. I want to get a feel for the con. Then if I go back a second time during the next year, will consider cosplaying. Sorry your friends did that to you.

Secret 6 - Convention, cosplay

[Picture is two drawn stick people and black text over a white background.]

Secret maker: I'm so excited to go to my first con!
Other person: You should cosplay!
Secret maker: No, I don't want to cosplay. I might wear a fandom shirt.
Other person: Cosplaying is great! People hug you and enjoy your outfit.
Secret maker: I really don't feel comfortable with the idea of me cosplaying. I don't want people noticing me. I want to go look at things.
Other person: Here's a link to your favorite character's outfit on eBay.
Secret maker: No, thank you, I don't want to draw attention to myself.

Time skip

Other person: Here's a cosplay for you to wear today. [Stick figure: has wings sprouting out of the head, has the word "them" on the head and "cosplay" over their blue torso. The words "ignoring", "insisting" and "insist" are floating around them.]
Secret maker: No, I don't want to! I'm going to go explore by myself. [Stick figure: Has the word "me" on the head and "a fandom" over the red torso. The words "unhappy", "stressed" and "just want to explore con, don't want to cosplay" are floating around them.]

Too long; didn't read: My first convention wasn't much fun, they kept insisting. [sad face emoticon]

The words missing from this dialogue are 'Go fuck yourself'

Why would they care enough to bring you a costume? Geez, some people can't take a hint. (And really, after you've told them no several times over...it's no longer only a hint.)

We've had a lot of 'insistent' secrets lately, and it makes me feel bad for the OP's. Respect people's wishes, dammit.

Your 'friends' are assholes and should let you have your fun your way. Sorry they ruined your con for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It probably makes me a bad person, but my first thought was "You friend sound like a real-life Ohno, I didn't thought someone like that really existed"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
What's an ohno?
nightscale: Starbolt (Fili <3)

[personal profile] nightscale 2013-09-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Man that is really oddly pushy I'm sorry that your friends didn't listen to you OP.
dragonimp: (One of those days)

[personal profile] dragonimp 2013-09-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how that would ruin your time. Your "friends" need to take a hint.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you have a better time at your second convention.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I hope they haven't been scared off :(

OP, maybe you can find someone else to go with. Cosplay is not compulsory! D:

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that people bullied you into cosplay. I mean, I love them the cosplayers but each should enjoy a con as they want to.

i didn't cos play on my fest con and it was great. i wish it would have been your experience, too. *hug*
