People who use rows of ~*~*~*~*~*~ to mark a section break. Just use transitional words and your readers will be able to follow it. If you really really have to use some kind of symbol, just use ---- but if you have any skill at writing at all, you should be able to create a clear transition with your WORDS.

If you don't put a section break when there's a noticeable time jump, I'm inclined to believe you're an awful writer, actually. Making a lengthy story read like one big scene is stupid.

Yeah, huge scene jumps without breaks are pretty jarring.

Yep, this. Maybe not an awful writer, but certainly a sloppy, lazy one who can't be bothered to format their fic properly. A simple line break will do, nothing fancy.

Um, yeah, that bothered me, too. Don't most "real" books have section breaks of some kind or another? :\

I mean, it's usually easy to tell when a scene is over. Even if the writing isn't OMG GREAT. But not putting something between sections just looks unfinished.

Even more annoying? I have seen people use like the title of the story as a page break.

TITLETITLETITLETITLETITLE. Annoying as hell.

I suspect this is a relic of fanfiction.net, which had a habit of eating all your section-breaks that used normal symbols or punctuation. If you're seeing it elsewhere, the writer probably got into the bad habit and hasn't adapted to sites that don't require ridiculous work-arounds.

This is why I use unobtrusive section breaks like a centered o0o to mark scenebreaks. ff.net doesn't eat them and if I post elsewhere, it doesn't look hideous.
