Yeah, that goes a long with mine. Especially slang. I read an Avengers fic once, written by a Brit, because Tony kept saying pants for underwear and "mum" was used several times.

As a Malay who's brought up using British English and Malay since childhood and read fan-media that mostly uses American English for the past half-decade, I can personally say that differentiating the two when writing fanfics becomes a little bit confusing for non-English speakers (doubly so if you use English-*insert-language-here* amalgamations in a daily basis).

Just my two cents.

You have a point. I never think about the authors I'm reading possibly being ESL because I usually can't tell.

This. One of the most annoying, for me, is when fandom has decided the character is a supergenius and the author has ridiculous ideas of how very smart people talk--i.e., very formally, and never using a 2 bit word when a 4 bit one would do. Snape was a frequent victim of this, in my HP fandom days.
