"the other man" "the taller said" "the younger/older/dark haired/etc" Just use the name. Or "they said". It will be clear, I promise. And honestly, repetetive name usage is much less noticeable than all these extra wordy ways of referring/describing.

I think that happens with new writers most often. Because they are taught in school not to be repetitive, so they go a bit overboard. It is especially annoying when they call them by a trait that you don't actually remember.

Ugh, I've been trying to correct this in a chapter of my fanfic for several weeks now. I really wonder just why the heck did I do this when I wrote it half a month back.

I think that's okay if it's used to either emphasize a difference between two characters when it's important, or if you need to keep the characters anonymous for whatever reason. But the rest of the time I'm with you.

I think this sort of thing is all right if it's used sparingly. But people do go overboard.
