Not going to lie, I sometimes get confused about that. But I don't write fanfics, so I don't worry too much. :P

Yeah, a lot of fanfic writers seem genuinely confused about it, and what gets me is that I have no idea how. Not even the most poorly-edited published novels I've read - and I've read a lot - have had that particular mistake in excess, so it's not something people pick up just from reading crap. I've only ever seen it in fanfiction and I don't know why.

It might be a language thing again. Many languages have different rules than English on punctuation. And fanfic is a very democratic genre in that regard.

I see this all the time, as well as people forgetting punctuation all together and just going "Blah blah" Jasper said. It looks so naked.
