Victorian novels in general seemed to like beating their characters down or killing them to drive home some point or another about society at the time. They had some great woobies back then, especially Jonathan Harker from Dracula and Victor Frankenstein (which, okay, Frankenstein was technically a few years shy of the actual Victorian era but still)

lmao, we read Dracula in my Gothic lit class last year and I spent pretty much the whole time being like "Jonathan, you poor son of a bitch. Jesus Christ." The other characters got fucked up pretty good too though. On another note, I really wish there was more Dracula fic...
