Because that's one of the game series' central themes. It's about making difficult choices, and about the losses sustained in pursuit of a goal. I mean, it's also about shooting space zombies, and it doesn't always pull off the difficult choices thing well, but they're central to the overall story, not superfluous dramatic fluff.

It honestly sounds like Mass Effect was a bad choice of game for you (or a bad rec on your friend's part) - IDK if you're generally a Bioware fan, but if not, I'd suggest staying away from most of their recent titles.
