Eh. Lots of people like reading about bad things happening to characters they like. There's something really wonderfully decadent about indulging in sad break-up emotions through fiction, I think.

Maybe you just like exploring the path that the canon didn't take?

I'm the opposite; I don't feel like I ship that many canon pairings either so when I ship them, I want them to stay together. I don't mind (and in most cases enjoy) drama, but I eventually want them to come back together again and prefer them to be endgame. However, I really love happy endings in general, so that factors into it. I like bittersweet and downright depressing endings too, but it kinda depends on the series and my mood at the time; sometimes I can't bear it.

But drama and heartbreak are things most people are fascinated with, so I don't guess this is too unusual.

Secret 1 - Shipping

[Picture is a chicken egg shell broken in two, with the word "Love" written on it.]

1. I rarely ship pairings that are canon or become canon.
2. I'm all for happily-ever afters for the pairings I ship. Even the oddest of odd couples get their happy end in my head.

Why then, when a couple I support does become canon, I get oddly fascinated by the thought of them breaking up (and never getting back together again)? It's not like I suddenly hate the couple, I love them just as much, I just want them to break up.

Maybe you just like the build-up

Sometimes,

anticipation is it's own reward. If you like the build-up to a relationship, then a break up could mean another build-up - either between the same two characters or they could move on to other relationships.

Or maybe you just appreciate the focus on relationship dynamics - sometimes when relationship becomes established, they get back-burnered. A break-up brings them front and center again.

Yeah, I do this. My OTP is canon and I love thinking up scenarios where they split up for stupid reasons and then get back together again.
